SOME REVIEW FOR THE ALBUMS:
BETWEEN THE WOLRD ALBUM REVIEW:
Although I've never heard of Seventh Avenue from Germany before, Between The Worlds is already the fourth longplayer by that band formed in 1989. They play melodic power metal inspired by German heroes like Helloween or Gamma Ray. Although I'm not really a big fan of those two bands, I think that Seventh Avenue have a somehow more natural approach towards metal. I don't know what may be the reason, but two plus-points for Seventh Avenue are the never annoying vocals and the right feeling for metal melodies. Tale Of The Forgotten Dreams and Angels Eyes are prime examples for structure in a power metal song. Weaker songs are more rare on this record, the two only exceptions being Until You Come Again which suffers from forced sounding vocals and Touch Of Your Love. The album also contains a cover version of Burning Heart, originally performed by Survivor. Massacre Records has decided to release this CD immediately at a mid-price to give this band a better chance. Although Seventh Avenue can't be described as the new metal sensation, they deserve it nevertheless.















REVIEW FOR THE ALBUM ETERNAL:
German Metallers Seventh Avenue are ready with their fifth album, this being my first meeting with the band. The guys play classic Metal, topped off with a bit of happy-go-lucky Power Metal, as so many do it today, with happy melodies, fast drumming, screaming guitars and so on and so forth.Songs like Remission with it's catchiness and great flow,The Emotional ballad Voices the rockingDomination Of Sin and Infinite King with it's great refrain and a forceful, classic Metal feeling to it, show that the band are able to pull it off in a successful way. These tracks are the great stuff here!The not-so-great stuff includes tracks like Raging Fire, Juggler Of Words and the titletrack, that all seem far too simple and easily forgotten, plus the fact that the music feels a bit like the same and the same all over again, especially the drums lack some variation, just like the happy Power Metal guitar riffs are very alike throughout the record. There's nothing challenging the listener on therecord, and to just play straight ahead, unoriginal Power Metal in a successful way, takes some stronger material than most of what the disc provides.So, what makes these guys stand out from the flock? Not much, put aside the lyrics about God, Jesus, forgiveness and the whole spectre of the Christian faith. What gets a little tiring about these sorts of White Metal bands is that they, like some of their Satanic counterparts, have the same topic for ALL songs without exception! For some this would be a huge turnoff, as the lyrics are very worshipful and convinced Christian, but I clearly prefer this topic to overly-satanic oh-so-evil nonsense.The technical ability of the band is all fine, and I like the singer, Herbie Langhans, who has a very classical Metal highpitch with lots of soul and nerve. On so me tracks he reminds me a little about Ronnie Atkins (Pretty Meids), and his voice has a great, rough sound to it.Unfortunately I feel like this record shows potential for something more, and would have made a great debut, but the problem is that this is Seventh Avenue's fifth album. Now, I am not familiar with any of their other works, but I guess they probably won't evolve anymore than they already have, which is a shame, because the record drowns among all the other "good-but-not-great" records existing in this style.There are a few killer tracks, like the ones I mentioned, lots of standard stuff, but no real bad songs. I bet some die hard Power Metallers are bound to find some good stuff here, but I would say, there's a lot of stuff out there as good as this, or better.
















REVIEW FOR THE SOUTHGATE ALBUM:
First and foremost we get hyper galloping power metal from start to end. 90% of the songs are fast paced because of the 2 ballads. The production is very good, almost crystal clear and you can taste all the instruments. The speed of the songs is reminiscent of Helloween’s KOT7Ks II in ‘Eagle Fly Free’, ‘March Of Time’, ‘You Always Walk Alone’. Herbie’s vocals are in a way related to Kiske and all those high pitched yet very melodic singers. Sometimes I guess we can say Geoff Tate’s influences can be heard, Fabio Lione can be recalled too although the voice is very different and sometimes very Bruce Dickinson’s raspy voice from FOTD. About the lyrical concept this is 100% old fashioned power metal (in a good way) very fantastic, very ‘’tale’’, elegant and esoteric which you can simply figure out from the cover (even for a christian band). About the music Helloween’s reminiscent old power metal comes up immediately and Gamma Ray ‘Somewhere Out is Space’ era (thou not the guitar heavy crunch) when trying to describe this. A keyboard intro very soft and mystical set the mood for the entire record. ‘Southgate’ hits your ears and now we say: ‘ok, this is power metal!’ The song lengths 10 min. and it has a relentless riffing and drumming. Herbie’s voice is tracked many times with higher tones which makes it even cooler. We also get killer guitar solo and lots (I mean lots) of double bass drums for never ending excitement. Very melodic guitars going along with the rhythm riffing is also present.Next to Southgate comes ‘Protection of Fool’ where the vocals are even higher, perfect song flow and now the first problem begins: this song has the same structure as the first one. When you go to ‘Carol’ its repetitive patterns begin to become annoying while not boring at all. ‘Carol’ begins speeding up and then an acoustic part with very high vocals and then again the rhythm guitars begin with interludes of melodic guitars. I will not detail every song since they are quite alike but I can point some highlights: ‘Storm’ is an instrumental based on classical music (ala Yngwie) and it shreds for 1:20min. The scales are very good handled and he shows off that he actually can play really fast. For me, ‘Big City Sharks’ has the best vocals through and through. The melodic sound of his voice combined with the background voices and the high pitched screams are particularly good in here. ‘Father’ begins very slowly and again Bruce Dickinson’s style is clear here and along with ‘Heart in your hand’ are the ballads in the album. On ‘Father’ some of the drums patterns and guitar riffing during the heavy parts sound like Iced Earth in ‘The Glorious Burden’ if you want my opinion,When you listen to ‘Puppet of the Mighty’ now we have the raspy voice of Andy Deris (oh yeah), just listen to him singing. Of course once the speed appears we now move to the regular power metal singing.‘Goodbye’ closes and it is very cool in its 8min. length and it is very slowly built too. Not fast as the previous songs but it is not a ballad per se. This is a cool mid tempo song with emotional feeling declining by the end of the song and a very good way to end the album. I hope this helps you understanding the kind of power metal this albums is. Due to the burst of power metal bands and after Nightwish, Gamma Ray and Rhapsody went to stardom in the late 90’s copycat bands took the genre to popularity but again the problem with power metal is that it repeats itself due to the speed and ultra high pitched vocals but this album is a very good piece of the genre showing what this was all about. Mega high speed, excitement, fast riffing, melodic guitar solos, fantastic worlds to explore and high screaming singers. BIOGRAPHY:
The German melodic metalheads SEVENTH AVENUE can already look back on quite some history and show well, that bands are last noticed in their home country. Already in 1989 the band was founded and released a demo tape. After several line-up changes the demo "First Strike" led them to their first record deal. In 1994 the debut album "Rainbowland" was relesed. Following the releases the singer left the band and from that time guitarist and mastermind Herbie Langhans took over the vocals. With their debut the band got a deal with Treasure Hunt Records in 1996. The second album "Tales of Tales" did well already, reaching rank 18 in the Japanese metal charts. The third album "Southgate" was released in 1998 and brought the band a great status in South America and Japan. In Europe the limited possibilities of their small label didn’t help the band much forward. After Geronimo Stade (bass) and Florian Gottsleben (guitars) joined the band a new deal was signed with the Brazilian label Megahard Records. The band is very popular in Brazil and played a three-week Brazilian tour in the fall of 2002. SEVENTH AVENUE then signed with Massacre Records, ready to conquer Europe! The album "Between the Worlds" was recorded from November 2001 until April 2002 at Woodwind studios, vocals were produced by Victor Smolski (Rage), the mastering was done in the Skywalk Studio and was followed by the even more successful “Eternals” album in 2004.SEVENTH AVENUE now for the first time in their band history present an outstanding conceptual album delivering a complex fantasy story. The new work entitled "TERIUM" impressingly proves the musical progression of the band in the last years. Not only with a playing time of over 70 minutes but also with a wide range of songs as never heard before. The new album was produced completely in the bands’ own Ave-studio and produced and mixed by Herbie Langhans alone. TERIUM was again mastered by Sascha Paeth at Gate Studios. The artwork was given into the hands by the Colombian artist Felipe Machado who delivered an impressing work.
