Are The Call still in existence or have Michael Been and his compatriots decided to call it a day after being dropped by their record company? As we rock fans on the other side of the water ponder that question, maybe we should checkout the new bands doing The Call/Simple Minds style of BIG rock where vistas of sound and anthemic melodies take the listener onward and upwards. The Walter-Eugenes Are Vocalist/Lyricist Walter Paul Robinette And Musician/Composer Rick Eugene May and their sound is thrilling and dense while their lyrics take in issues like concern for the lost ("Thousand Years"), the need to return to simple faith ("Back To The Basics") and the lust for power ("What's Going On") are equally insightful. A fine debut from an exciting new band.A farewell gift from Walter Paul Robinette and Rick Eugene May whose Enigmatic Rock N Roll saw them signed to Christian labels, releasing music across the globe and managing to achieve a sizeable cult following without really breaking out big time! I guess they were never really going to fit into the mould! This is a farewell CD for their fans and collects together a few odds and ends, demos and instrumental versions of tracks, etc. It's definitely for fans but amongst all the curios, there's the odd moment where you glimpse what made this band so original. The groovy rock of Great White Lawyer bounces along effectively and Where You Are is a similar slab of funky rock. Strongest tracks are probably the title cut with its insistent drive and More Than Understanding, which has its jangling guitars and passionate vocal performance. With Ex-Chagall Guavara men Dave Perkins and Lynn Nicholls producing (and playing Guitars) on this set its full of moody, Aggressively Astringent Rhythms, some nice grungey moments with Mr Robinette wheezing and hollering surprisingly catchy song.
