Ok, Running Out Of Time (1987) is not Heavy metal really but early Classic Christian Hard Rock maybe Melodic Metal. Daniel Band is very important as it was one of the less than handful early Christian rock bands who paved the way for the Christian Heavy Metal scene. This 5th album was the bands final studio recording and very good. Few CDs were made by Refuge Records of this album and has made it somewhat a collector's item. Tony Rossi great guitar playing and Dan McCabe's searing vocals makes this album appeal to a wider audience especially among Christians. The songs are great with very good lyrics. I love this album and was an upgrade from cassette to CD....thankfully I got it before it sky rocketed in price.

The Daniel Band was a Canadian hard rock group. They were pioneers in Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) for their sound that ranged from rock to heavy metal. During the early to mid 1980s, they were one of the most popular and important bands of their genre in the Christian music industry. The group originated in 1979 in suburban Toronto, Ontario, and were based out of a Brethren Assembly in Scarborough, Ontario called Bendale Bible Chapel which held a weekly coffeehouse (The One Way Inn) in its church basement, that featured various Christian rock groups, that the band members played in. The Daniel Band suffered from the same problem that all Christian rock acts in Canada face in the country's tiny Christian music industry. In order to maintain a career, Christian musicians in Canada must play in the secular market or break into the immense American CCM industry. Daniel Band were never interested in playing bars and clubs. Though they had critical acclaim, played to large audiences, and had a large grassroots fan base, they never reached their goal of mainstream success in the American CCM market. Nevertheless, no other Canadian Christian musician or group has ever matched their success. The band placed as a top three finalist in the 1982 Homegrown concert sponsored by Toronto radio station Q107,And played at the El Mocambo with the championship (Oliver Heavyside, listed here in wiki as One-Hit Wonders--US and Canada as the Partland Brothers) and runner-up (Cameo Blues Band) groups, both longtime professional bar bands on the Toronto scene.Their first album, On Rock (1982), offered a progressive rock sound that was typical of the era, in the tradition of April Wine and Boston, but with a harder edge. The solid rock guitar and high register vocals reminded fans of the Canadian rock group Rush. Their sound grew heavier with Straight Ahead (1983), and by the time of their third album Run from the Darkness (1984) they were a heavy metal act with all the trappings. This was their spandex and studded dog collar stage, with a sound that was closer to AC/DC.Many argue the American CCM market was not ready for pure metal acts until much later into the mid to late 80s when Stryper (1984) and other CCM bands such as Whitecross, Bride, Shout, Guardian, and Bloodgood were able to sell records and establish hard rock as a viable genre in Christian music. Daniel Band was not the first hard rock act in CCM; earlier Jesus music rock acts included Chicago's blues-based Rez Band (Resurrection Band)(with whom Daniel Band often opened for around Southern Ontario), hard rock band Barnabas, classic rock act Jerusalem, and Petra, but they were the first band to offer a clear and simplistic gospel message combined with a sound that was the heaviest so far. The band has never officially broken up, (although a farewell concert was held in Toronto in April 1988) and its members have been involved with various projects in Churches (including Bendale) and Schools where the members now live. Tony Rossi released a blues based album on R.E.X. Records in 1990. Dan McCabe was involved with a band called Dreamer which released one album, Full Metal Racket, in 1991.In November 2006, Daniel Band was featured as the opening group for Audio Adrenaline's farewell tour concert in Toronto, along with Geoff Moore. Earlier in the year, there were two appearances in Sarnia, including an August festival that also saw a reunion of a local (Arkona, Ontario) group named Elim Hall, who were contemporaries of Daniel Band in the mid-1980s, and Glenn Kaiser Band (featuring two members of Resurrection Band). In 2007, the band played at a May celebration of the One Way Inn's (now a drop-in) 35th Anniversary and the 50th Anniversary of Bendale Bible Chapel, and Freedom Festival Canada in Oro-Medonte, Ontario during August. There is a date set for Bendale on May 1, 2009. .

Daniel band, hailing from Canada, have been rocking it hard since the early 80's, before the big boom of rock/metal hit the states. The true fathers of hard rock/metal belongs to them, Jerusalem, Barnabas and the like. I discovered them during the "Run from the Darkness" era (the album following this one), and quickly grabbed up copies of this and the previous release "On Rock." The first three releases are engrained in my brain because they are such classics from my early days of Christian rock. A must have release of classic Christian hard rock.If you love classic hard rock like Foriegner, AC/DC, RUSH, Styx, etc. this album is a must have! This band was very talented and had a sound quality comparable to their secular counter parts. Back in the 80's I bought every release I could find from these guys but lost them moving back and forth across the country. I was amazed and thrilled to find their stuff still available online. Its too bad they didn't get more notariety:The Daniel Band was a Canadian hard rock group. About The Album Run From the Darkness:
It's A Classic Re-Issue of Canadian 80's rock band. Includes 2 bonus tracks, plus the hit video "Walk on the Water". For fans of: Rez, Barnabas, Jerusalem, Ted Nugent, Triumph, Rush.Originally released in 1984, Run From the Darkness was Daniel Band's personal salute to all those who can - and do - rock. With Run from the Darkness, the band pulls out all the stops, and pledges allegiance to the mid 80's era of classic hard rock and heavy metal. Tony Rossi peels off one meaty riff after another on swaggering commercial metal heavy weights like Sixteen and the title track. Perhaps no Christian metal song induced instant fist-pumping and air guitar than "Walk on the Water," which received generous airplay on Canada's MuchMusic (Canada's version of MTV). Run from the Darkness will blow you away with the melodic mentality of Kiss, but the ability to rock you, like AC/DC! This classic now has two bonus tracks from the original 1980 demo, as well as being an enhanced CD with the hit video of "Walk on the Water" available for the first time ever!
ABOUT THE ALBUM STRAIGHT AHEAD:
Limited Edition reissue of '83 album by Canadian hard rock/metal band with the melodic mentality of Kiss, but the ability to rock you like AC/DC..Originally released in 1983, STRAIGHT AHEAD, while adhering to well earned rock formulas, takes bold, expansive moves. From the haunting melody of “In My Mind” to the visceral attack of “Lustful Illusions” and the "in-your-face" “Reality,” this collection of songs is an excursion to fresh musical avenues that never stray too far from the band’s signature offering of high energy riffs and to-the-point lyrics.Straight Ahead, the 1983 sophomore release from Canada’s Daniel Band, proves aptly named in that, for a lack of better words, it moves in a “straight ahead” and no frills hard rock direction. A much heavier effort when compared to the bands 1982 debut On Rock, Straight Ahead might lack some of the polish of its predecessor but stands out as the stronger and more well rounded project from a musical standpoint. This is clearly reflected in the growth demonstrated by the band in terms of its songwriting skills in that the album delivers not only a greater degree of consistency but versatility as well: Straight Ahead, of course, features its share of energetic hard rockers (“Power Of Love” and “Reality”) but also a semi-ballad (“Here I Am”), a groove flavored number (“T’ank You”) and even an acoustic based ballad (“In My Mind”).Give Daniel Band, at the same time, a great deal of credit for maintaining the same high level of performance it displayed on On Rock. Bassist Dan McCabe continues to bring his refined, classic tenor lead vocal style and combines with talented newcomer Matt Del Duca on drums to form quite the tight sounding rhythm section. Guitarist Tony Rossi, who lends his raspy vocal delivery to three of the albums tracks, furnishes a more than adequate amount of gritty lead guitar work. Bill Findlay rounds out the mix on rhythm guitar. While Straight Ahead might not showcase the same polished feel to its production values as On Rock, it features the better mix in that all the instrumentation, particularly the bass and drums, stands out in the cleaner and crisper sounding manner. Please note that when Straight Ahead was released in 1983 it came out only in the cassette and vinyl formats. It did not make its way onto CD until 2003 when Retroactive Records re-issued it onto one disc with the bands follow up effort Run From The Darkness. When the 2003 re-issue went out of print, Retroactive released it again on CD but with two bonus tracks - “Free From Sin” and “I’m Sorry” - from Daniel Band’s 1980 demo tape.Opening the album to a hard hitting guitar riff, “Power Of Love” is carried forward at an upbeat tempo by a crunchy rhythm guitar until it culminates for a strong, melodic flavored chorus. After the song slows as McCabe delivers a worshipful message:Rossi steps to the plate with several seconds of sharp sounding lead guitar work.“You’re All I Need” fades in before moving forward to a quietly played guitar line as the rhythm guitar bounces in and out of the mix. Once the rhythm guitar establishes itself hard and heavy, the song attains a solid, hook filled chorus shored up by a punchy bass line. “You’re All I Need” is a song of faith:The albums first-rate title track is a no-nonsense and in your face hard rocker. Rossi lends his vocal talents to a song moving at a guitar driven mid-tempo pace, a raucous environment established as “Straight Ahead” advances on a sweeping chorus backed by a touch of vocal harmonies. A fluid guitar solo that is allowed to flow between the left and right channel tops off one of the albums stronger tracks. The semi-ballad “Here I Am” gradually fades in before a quietly played guitar line slowly pushes it forward. Picking up in pace halfway through its first verse, “Here I Am” peaks upon reaching an emotionally charged chorus accentuated by a forward but complementary mix of keyboards. Rossi contributes a bluesy guitar solo to a song coming across in the form of a prayer:The wonderful “T’ank You” stands out as one of the albums more creative compositions. The song reflects a groove-laden if not a funk or even reggae vibe as a near perfect mix of acoustic guitar, bass and percussion carries it ahead to a catchy chorus with a worshipful feel:Rossi really stands out here on lead vocals. While a bit out of place in a mostly hard rock environment, “T’ank You” proves nothing less than a great deal of fun to listen to.Straight Ahead, unfortunately, loses a bit of focus during its second half.Things begin to go downhill, for example, with “Lustful Illusions”, a driving hard rocker with a melody on the repetitive side. The song takes off with a ton of upfront guitar driven momentum but hits a wall upon attaining a chorus with a hook not quite strong enough to allow it to hold up under repeated play. As its title implies, “Lustful Illusions” exposes the pornography and sex industry The punchy “Reality” begins to several seconds of tastefully done lead guitar work before an aggressively delivered riff shores up its first and second verse hard and heavy. After Rossi adds several seconds of razor sharp lead guitar work, the song closes out its third and final verse in the same catchy but hard hitting fashion. “Reality” delivers the salvation message in no uncertain terms:.The quietly played guitar line at the start of “Come Into My Life” gives way to a crisp sounding rhythm guitar. Slowing as keyboards move to the front of the mix upon reaching its first verse, “Come Into My Life” transitions to a fleeting but energetic chorus with an overriding repetitious feel. While certainly conveying a strong message, I tend to pass on this one.Likewise, the driving hard rocker “Comin’ Home” can come across a bit overbearing. The song advances through its first verse at a faster and more upbeat tempo only to slow upon reaching a blues flavored chorus held back by the heavy handed manner in which it is delivered. More often than not I end up hitting the skip button here. The album ends strongly with “In My Mind”, an acoustic based ballad giving rise to a compelling melody and a very fine vocal performance from Rossi. The two tracks from Daniel Band’s demo sound a bit rough around the edges but serve to showcase the bands potential. “Free From Sin” features a more prominently placed bass line when compared to the On Rock version, while the excellent ballad “I’m Sorry” – which also appeared on On Rock – comes across with a slightly heavier and more aggressive feel. All around, Straight Ahead proves a stronger effort when compared to On Rock. While the album fails to deliver any huge tracks that might rank with “I’m Sorry” and “Never Again”, it does feature its share of quality hard rockers (“Power Of Love”, You’re All I Need” and “Reality”) in addition to a very fine semi-ballad (“Here I Am”) and a good groove influenced number (“T’ank You”). In the end, Daniel Band exhibits the talent here which led it to record its groundbreaking follow up effort Run From The Darkness.
