ABOUT ONCE DEAD-VISIONS OF HELL Originally scheduled to be released in 2006 on Open Grave Records, the recording was delayed with the departure/release of original vocalist Scott Waters. The band finally recorded "Vision of Hell" in 2007 with a release date in mid-2007. Unfortunately these recordings were not released either with guitarist Larry Farkas leaving the band and taking his songs and recordings with him. Unfortunately a release by the 2004 line-up of Scott Waters, Larry Farkas, Glen Mancaruso, Doug Thieme and Roger Dale Martin just wasn't meant to be. Fans will have to be happy with the "Return with a Vengeance" DVD instead. The new Once Dead line-up began recording again in October 2007 with a possible March 2007 release. Only original guitarist Doug Thieme is left in the band at this point, although longtime guitarist Glenn Rogers (Deliverance, Hirax, Steel Vengeance) is still in the band as well. On this recording, Devin Shaeffer, Glenn Rogers, Doug Thieme, Jim Chaffin and Angelo Espino. (Angelo & Glenn were formerly in Hirax together. Devin and Jim were formerly in Fasedown together.) The album was finally set to release on Oct. 28, 2008.Once Dead - Visions of Hell is pretty heavy and the drumming is spectacular. The guitar tones are heavy and beefy but there's static when the guitar is by itself,This CD is easily the best CD of 2008. It was definitly worth the wait. I was blown away from beginning to end. The team of Farkas/Theime is still unbelievable. I have to believe that this sound and type of music is exactly what Vengeance Rising would have evolved into. The guitar riffs are brutal and awesome, the vocals are amazing. The band is just top notch. I really really want to hear a second CD buy these guys, no doubt. But, I think it will be very difficult to top this one! However, Visions of Hell" is raw crunchy thrash metal with a slightly modern edge! The production is raw and abrasive. Each and every song is delivered with the same energy that was on those old Vengeance albums. Devin's vocals are punishing and brutal.
An originator in Christian metal. Vengeance Rising led the way for a ton of other extreme Christian bands to follow. After the first two albums, the original four members of Vengeance left the band and formed Die Happy leaving vocalist Roger Martinez to forge ahead on his own. Roger released two more albums under the Vengeance Rising name before renouncing his faith in God. Several albums by Vengeance Rising have been rumored to have been released since, but none of these rumors have turned out to be true. Roger still owns the rights to the original Vengeance Rising name and logo. In 2004 the original four members of Vengeance Rising reformed with the intention of doing a reunion show that would be recorded for DVD. The show was originally billed as simply VENGEANCE (sand the RISING) but the band name was changed at the last minute to ONE DEAD to avoid conflicts with former vocalist Roger Martinez. This is evident by the band's set list which still contained the Vengeance logo on it at the show. (That set list can be seen on the DVD if you click on the track listing. Note the Vengeance logo.) Along with vocalist Scott Waters of Ultimatum the band performed in Anaheim,California on August 29th, 2004. The show was recorded and released on a DVD cleverly titled Return with a Vengeance". After this show the band decided to continue on and do some more shows. Eventually this line-up decided to record a new CD. Unfortunately the core of the band fell apart with the original members leaving the fold and vocalist Scott Waters parting ways before the CD was recorded. By 2007 the album had still not been released and all but Doug Thieme of the original Once Dead reunion remained in the band. (see the Once Dead page for more.)I hear alot of flack about Vengeance Rising's last two albums not being as good as their first. It may be true that when Roger headed VR alone with only studio musicians, the band lost the good technical feel from the Human.
Sacrifice/Once Dead days. But I actually like Vengeance Rising's last two albums well enough and if you liked the first two, give these a try. At least try this two in one KMG archive if you're not sure...although like many of KMG's releases, two songs are missing from the "Destruction Comes" album but you're only missing an short studio burst and the last song from there. Onto the albums...Destruction Comes. Yeah, its true this album is really repetitive...the songs do basically sound the same and some can drone one. But for me, if I'm in the right mood the album can work once in a blue moon. While it lacks in good technical thrash/variation, you can still jam to this well enough. I dunno, maybe I just like the album to be arbitrary to those who say its awful. LOL! Now onto Released Upon The Earth...see, I heard this one first of all of VR's catalogue and I liked it almost right off, in fact it actually my second favorite of the four albums. While still predominantly thrash, Roger has worked some death/growl vocals and some slower grinding songs into the albums sound, i.e. the title track. The first four songs are pretty wicked, especially the opening six minute guitar solo "Help Me"...wicked!!! You must hear this! After song four, the album gets a little less interesting but still good. However, you'll notice songs 8 and 10 sound almost identical...hmmm. Ah well. These aren't perfect albums and true they don't hold very well compared to the early material, but I still half-way recommend them. Give 'em one listen at least..(http://www.holymetalrob.com/)
