Barnabas was formed in 1977 and existed under various lineups until 1983. The earliest lineup recorded a 45 RPM Single in 1979 with the songs "Directory Assistance," and "Nicodemus." The classic lineup that solidified in 1983 (with the Approaching Light Speed album)Was Nancy Jo Mann,Gary Mann,Kris
Klingensmith and Brian Belew..

BARNABAS - The Story Monte Cooley, founder of Barnabas, on the origins of the band: "The Lord put it on my heart to start a hard-rock Christian band in 1977, for evangelizing young people. At the time, I was unaware of *any* Christian groups that were playing anything that could remotely be called hard or metal rock; this was before I heard about Resurrection Band. "Monte eventually left the band. But Barnabas went on to record some of the greatest Christian Metal acheivements of the early to mid 80's. They were highly controversial and took a lot of heat and criticism from several "Christian leaders". Barnabas broke a lot of ice for the heavy Christian music scene in terms of sound, appearance, and lyrical content. Their best known albums were "Approaching Light Speed", "Feel The Fire", and the lyrically controversial "Little Foxes". Known for their axe grinding guitar work and soaring female vocals, Barnabas were extremely talented. The final four members of the band were:Kris Klingensmith - drums, percussion, lyricsNancy Jo Mann - vocalsGary Mann - bass, keyboardsBrian Belew - guitarThe band broke up during the recording of "Little Foxes". Since then several of their albums have been rereleased...and a "following" of the band has been rekindled. Be sure to check out these Christian metal icons. When HEAR THE LIGHT came out on litte, Canada Tunesmith records, it was all about the punk/new wave cover. Was it just an act or did the music match the cover? It did and it does -- nothing like Barnabas! Really, an amazing debut recorded with "stolen hours" from the studio. Monte Cooley is one flashy guitar player, twisting and squealing the strings like nobody's business! Keith on drums, Gary on bass, and Nancy Jo on vocals push the whole thing way, way, WAY over the edge! FIND YOUR HEART A HOME is a weak follow-up -- poorly produced, lyrics over-written, and the cover graphics are tame and poorly thought out. The best track is SOUTHERN WOMEN. This could be a 5 star review but 4 stars are for LIGHT -- one star for HOME. After this, they went on the receive the much more popular and better produced LIGHT SPEED, FIRE and FOXES, but never again would they hit the passion and hard core musical "truth" of HEAR THE LIGHT.But Anyway Hear The Light was the first release from Barnabas, who would later morph into a highly creative and very heavy metal band. On their first release however, they are not playing what could be called metal. There's some nice stuff here, good guitar work but the songs are fairly simple, nothing like the complex songwriting they would later produce. On Find Your Heart A Home, they begin to flex their songwriting muscles, and there are some very nice songs here. However, this particular release is somewhat marred by production and the lack of a talented guitarist. This is one of those cds that I would have loved to hear re-recorded by the band at a later point, because there are some really good songs here, but they don't get the treatment they deserve. For Barnabas in their prime I suggest picking up Approaching Light Speed and Feel The Fire. This two-cd release is really for fans of the band, who remember when these two releases represented one of the few hard rock acts in Christian music.Get Approaching Light Speed,by Barnabas, the best Hard Rock Christian album. Ever!!!!Strongly recommended if you enjoy 1970's-style classic hard rock such as Rush, Heart, and Kansas. Literate, articulate lyrics w/powerful female vocals. Best tracks on this disc are "Find Your Heart a Home" (very catchy), "Conflict of Desire,"And "Little Faith" "Playing for Him" (also very catchy, a little reminiscent of the band Boston). A couple of these early tracks are less than perfect but don't let that stop you from checking out this awesome band. They got even better on the next two album(http://www.holymetalrob.com/)
