What do you get when melody and crushing guitars interlock? Heavy metal action and expressive satisfaction in the form of Age of Darkness. Released on R.E.X. Records in 1991, Age of Darkness, Haven's second album, reminds us that even metal bands can create art full of musical grace and poetic splendor. Heaven's Metal magazine would liken the band's sound to "the dramatic and melodic territory of Queensryche." While the band didn't enjoy the luxury of the marketing of bands like Queensryche, Sacred Warrior, and Iron Maiden, their albums more than proved they played in the same exclusive league. Age of Darkness offers a progressive metal paradise with soaring vocals, and beautiful melodies carried by a powerful guitar attack. With their second release, Haven took their craft to the next level. R.E.X. chalked up a victory with the release of Age. Retroactive Records is proud to make this classic available once again, along with 7 previously unreleased bonus tracks from leader singer Kevin Ayer's new hard rock band, Thunderbucket. By the time this CD came out I was heavily into Christian metal. I didn't even listen to this disc before I bought it. Rumor had it that Haven were a thrash band. Their record lable at the time, R.E.X., was releasing some fine thrash at the time with bands like Believer and Sacrament. However it didn't take long to discover that Haven weren't thrash. Rather, Haven are power metal. Unfortunately this description brings thoughts of keyboard laced, dungeons and dragons metal. This is not the case either. Haven blend together a traditional metal sound along with some elements of speed and thrash metal to create a sound that is all their own. Vocalist Kevin Ayers has an exaggerated John Arc (Ex-Fates Warning) meets Warrel Dane (Nevermore/Sanctuary) style. He tends to use a lot of exaggerated vibrato when he sings which at times can be annoying, but generally seems to work well here. This CD dominated my car stereo for months after purchasing it. Songs like "On Judgement Day" and "Below the Grave" are so infectious that a decade later the mere mention of the titles brings the chorus echoing through my head. A bit of trivia about this band, when this album came out all their members except Kevin (who was 21 I think) were under 19. .For Any More Info Go To (Haven )
